| Freaky Movie Review :[2022] |
Like writer-director Christopher Landon's 2017 sleeper hit Happy Death Day, Freaky is a throwback slasher spliced with the plot of a much-loved family-friendly comedy, and while its murder-loop homage to Groundhog Day was vague but adequate (and a masterpiece) its (compared to the god-awful sequel), proves more charming the second time around, ironing out the creases with ease. A classic thrown into the blender on this occasion is Freaky Friday, which explains the otherwise off-putting title, in which Landon swaps the bodies of killer and victim – a smart conceit that also yields smarter results. And what's most refreshing about his work here is that he doesn't just rely on his gimmicky elevator pitch to sell the entire movie but instead delves deeper into, "What if?" A surprisingly substantial, perhaps even sentimental, rare Saturday night schlock horror that's more than just mayhem in its mind.
